Zero Robotics High School Tournament 2013 (USA Only)

September 07, 2013

The 2013 High School Tournament registration takes place in the spring and summer (Apr-Sep), with the main competition season in the fall (Sep to Dec). The tournament is open to any group of high-school (or equivalent) students in the USA and its territories. Teams from the European Space Agency member countries will be participating in a joint tournament.

Official Rules

"Zero Robotics" tournaments open the world-class research facilities on the International Space Station (ISS) to high school students. Students write programs at their high schools that may control a satellite in space! The goal is to build critical engineering skills for students, such as problem solving, design thought process, operations training, and team work.

The participants compete to win a technically challenging game by programming their strategies into the SPHERES satellites. The game is motivated by a challenging problem of interest to DARPA, NASA and MIT. The programs are "autonomous" - that is, the students cannot control the satellites during the test itself.

The tournament begins with simulations in phases from 2D to 3D, gradually increasing in difficulty. After elimination rounds, the finalists will see their code run in the SPHERES satellites aboard the International Space Station with live transmission from space. The finals take place at MIT and are also webcast live to all participants so that remote viewing is possible.

Student teams can create, edit, save and simulate projects online. They may use a graphical block diagram editor or a C editor to write code, then simulate their program immediately and see the results in a flash animation. MIT provides the simulation and C programming interfaces via the Zero Robotics website--no special software is required. The simulation also enables teams to compete against themselves or pre-coded standard players and challenge other teams informally; students have ample opportunities to test different strategies before submitting their code for a formal competition. All submissions to challenge others and to the competition are via the website. Students also have access to online tutorials and an MIT technical support system.

Hotel Info

Unfortunately MIT does not have any dormitory-style housing available for guests, you will need to find accommodations off-campus.

Below we have listed the hotels closest to MIT that have some form of MIT pricing arrangements (not necessarily the best, sometimes online rates will be better). Do check "weekend" rates (or other promotions) which might give even better prices than MIT rates. All the listed hotels are within a mile or so of campus.

The MIT Official address is: 77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02139 so that you can search for hotels too.

If a hotel does not give you the MIT rate, feel free to book and then contact Jimmy Kontoravdis at MIT's Travel - Sourcing & Procurement Services (Email: jravdis@mit.edu , Ph: 617 253 2756 ) to see if he can help you correct the rates. Be sure not to book a nonrefundable rate in this case, unless it is actually cheaper than the MIT rate and you are definitely planning to attend. Please note that Jimmy will be out of the office on vacation starting 1/1/13 so plan accordingly.

ISS Preparation Tips

The following test is from a 2012 ISS test session where we demonstrated several elements of the game. We have selected the test below to show the diferences between simulation and ISS.

Maneuvering

This test shows two satellties navigating. After moving to their initial positions SPH1 (Blue) moves towards a fixed target using setPositionTarget. SPH2 (RED) turns off all control and is gradually pulled into the cloud.

Side by side screen capture (ISS on right)

Items to note

  • Overall, estimation noise is similar to the simulation.
  • You may see the blue satellite jump forward then correct backwards slightly. In this case, the satellite's actual CO2 tank was starting to get low. At each time step the internal positioning algorithm expected the satellite to be slightly farther ahead, then measurements corrected the position.
  • Timing of motion is not exactly the same. The crew on the ISS sets a pressure regulator on top of the satellite control the force produced by the thrusters. If there is some error in the setting due to the accuracy of the pressure guage or changes in the tank level, there can be some variation in the satellite thrust.
  • To make sure your code can tolerate variations in thrust and estimation noise, make sure you do not have overly strict timing requirements to arrive at a particular location and make sure to incorporate measurements to correct for errors in the expected motion.

Additional Tips

Now is the time to make your code as bulletproof as possible:

  • If you have noticed any small inconsistencies from run to run, try to track them down. Any simulation crashes or "Invalid force or torque" warnings should be taken seriously. On the ISS, they may cause satellite resets, resulting in a match being decided by simulation results.
  • Using "closed loop" controllers such as setPositionTarget() and setAttitudeTarget() will tend to be more reliable then "open loop" commands like setForces() and setTorques() that don't use measurements to make corrections.
  • Use the forums to talk to your fellow competitors. There are several veteran teams out there that may be willing to share some advice about preparing for the ISS.
  • You do not have to remove DEBUG() statements from your final code, but they will not be displayed by the satellites.

ISS Match Details

The following tables show the official results of the ISS finals matches. The "ISS Visualization" link provides an animation of the match while the "Simulation" link shows a comparison to the match in simulation.

Notes:

1) Please ignore the virtual fuel values displayed in the ISS visualizations. To save code space, the virtual fuel values from the ISS matches were not returned to ground. The behavior of the SPHERES in the ISS visualization accurately represents the competition. For example a satellite's virtual fuel indicator in the visualization may show "0" when the satellite still has virtual fuel and is maneuvering.

2) Differences between the ISS and the simulation matches are expected, especially during periods of collision avoidance where small changes in initial conditions of the avoidance situation can change the behavior significantly.

3) The code for each of the finalist implementations has been posted in tables at the bottom of this page.
